  • Change the law for buying a gun

They should change the law on how people should buy guns. Besides the usual rule they should add a friend or close associate to also be present and sign that they have not seen this person go thru any personality changes. The massacre in Aurora Colorado could have been prevented if someone was present to co-sign that he was going to be a good gun owner.

The loophole is that some folks do change mentally after a period of months. How else can we prove that people will be good gun owners?

i'm pretty sure you're not quite serious with that first thing.  but can you just see it.  you cosign for someone to buy a gun, they do something horrible, and suddenly you're in jail.  or your statue is taken down.

i have nothing else to contribute.  i don't like guns. period.  it bothers me that my kids are in my in-laws' house with guns (father-in-law is a hunter and is very safe with his guns. but still.)

  • PPhilip

@promisesunshine - My additional law has no presidence. People get driver licenses without co signers unless they are below legal driving age.

I would be sad that someone without friends or associates could not get a gun for protection but still we should limit who is able to get guns. It is good that father in law is a responsible person. I think he would be glad to give a recommendation to others who need someone to co sign for gun ownership. In fact they should have regional folks like your father in law to help co sign possible gun owners.

Maybe the type of guns should be limited. Seems every massacre is done with semi automatics with large rounds quantity. People are the problems. Too many violent crazies walking around free.

how are people safer owning a gun?  are you suggesting that someone would take a gun to a movie theater and shoot down a crazy person?  if i thought a person going to the movies could legally carry a gun, i wouldn't go.  i think it's a false feeling of security.  we can't protect ourselves from everything that might happen.

i'm exploring the concept here.  it was a serious question.

  • PPhilip

@promisesunshine - Your father in Law has done a good job in owning a gun, but like you say the option of owning a gun varies and some folks are not good potential gun owners.

Martin Travon's case with Zimmerman will be interesting and the stand your ground law will undergo public scrutiny. I just don't like it when loners decide to own guns my additional part to the law may hinder loners from getting guns.
  • PPhilip

@LadyofWaters - guns with potential for mass murder is definitely on my list to ban. But so far it is the loner who has potential for being a lone crazy gunman and in this case he bought his guns legally and having multiple weapons is a recipe for disaster.

  • promisesunshine

you can't tell what's going inside someone's head just by looking at them.  people are complicated.  why was this kid a loner.  that's what i'd like to know.  what are we doing wrong that kids think things like shooting up theaters and blowing up buildings are an option.

  • TiredSoVeryTired
What we need to do is find out how to stop people from wanting to mass murder in the first place. These happen in the UK where generally people can't own guns. Mass murders happen without guns, look at the Bath school incident in like 1927. A guy killed 45 people, mostly students, with dynamite.

In answer to your question....background checks, possibly a current psychoanalysis, training, training, training.  Licenses to be renewed every 2-4 years with a written test and possibly the psychological interview, another back ground check to make sure there is nothing new in their profile, written tests regarding law updates.  There are no guarantees and retesting and requalifing every 2-3 years is a lot of trouble but carrying a gun is a lot of responsibility...heavy responsibility...You got to pay the piper if you want to do the dance.  Also heavy fines and possibly jail time if you are found carrying a gun without doing all of the above.  I have my CHL but in all honesty it wasn't hard to get, probably not hard enough for some people.

The registration form for handguns in New York state requires refrences. But I think most people could get someone to be a reference if they needed one. That doesn't account for people who buy guns illegally. I bet that accounts for most of our violent crimes that have occurred locally this year. It's too bad this maniac got his hands on weapons. But laws do little to change a maniacs behaivior.

  • locomotiv

With all these people owning guns it is no surprise that such a massacre would happen. There has to be at least a crazy person out of a million. It can't fail...So this will never end unless they take guns away from all civilians.

  • Aloysius_son

@locomotiv - @promisesunshine - We could put a gun in every citizen's hands, or we could destroy every gun on the planet and there will still be people killing people in violent outbursts. Stricter laws with more severe penalties has been the greatest deterent yet employed by civilized culture in maintaining social order, from a historical perspective. From a theoretical perspective; moral and ethical instruction at all levels of education would likely produce desirable results, but then in practice, we would be relying on individual teachers' interpretations of morailty and ethics, which could be skewed.

It's not as simple as we would hope.

  • promisesunshine

@Aloysius_son - it's not simple at all.  it seems like we're all at the whim of how the wind blows.  short of lobotomizing everyone or hiding in a bubble, we're stuck with hoping this kind of thing doesn't happen to someone we know.  considering how interconnected we are, that's impossible too.
i got some good advice yesterday which was essentially keep on keeping on.  i'm working on it.

There is no cure for lunacy. Punishing the entire population for the actions of a few lunatics is unjust and does not make any sense at all.

  • angys_coco

The whole problem is that NRC is controlling the country and is not allowing gun control to be brought in.

  • vexations

I think I did see that someone here on Xanga said that this would not have happened if people were packing while going to the movies.  Arm everyone, or arm no one  seems to be the debate.  I imagine I will have to walk through a metal detector soon to attend a movie.  Either that or the theater will have an “armed guard” like they put on airplanes. I don’t own a gun, have never owned a pistol and have only owned a 410 and 12 gauge shotguns for bird hunting in rural areas.  I’ve been to “gun shows” and I see no reason that people should be able to buy a “street-sweeper” plus high powered ammunition there.  If you have never attended one you should.  One could arm a small nation’s military with what is on display and for sale at a gun show. The National Rifle Association should be ashamed of its organization.  I wish they advocated the use of guns for hunting and we had policies more in line with the UK.

there will always be evil in the world but we could slow it down

  • locomotiv

@Aloysius_son - i know but still there are too many guns distributed to the ordinary people...it makes it worse for sure.

  • HUMOR_ME_NOW
I wish there was someway, as you do, to prevent these dreadful misuse of firearms. This event made me very sad. It made my wife mad, but me sad. I knew there would be a lot of discussion about the control of firearms and the banning of some.

I am not optimistic that something will be offered that gives us a better chance of identifying those with violent propensities.  Maybe your idea is a good step to take.

I don't like guns. Period. Perhaps there should be a deterrant to buying a gun before a certain age. Like may be fifty! Just saying.

  • KnightInCROATIANarmor

I think laws about buying guns should be more strict but I'm not an American. THe things like Colorado shooting - past and present should be avoided at all costs. Certain things should be done to make sure taht crazy people don't get their hands on guns. I'm not even gonna talk about streets. THat's a whole different story altogether.

  • PPhilip

@Babyboomerjill - The Aurora shooting is still in the news, I certainly hope it does not inspire copycats and the surprise is that the shooter did not get away (an alert swat policeman noticed he was slightly different than the others)

@KnightInCROATIANarmor -It is sad that those who do not learn from the lessons in the past are doomed  to fail in the future. Good luck in your love and have a happy upcoming birthday.
  • RestlessButterfly

Too much brutal and bloody screens on the TV and movies, that's why.  Some people just copycat whatever they saw on TV and movies, and they made history!

  • jillcarmel

@PPhilip - yes, they said he wasn't in complete uniform as the swat team was. He's not insane but just plain EVIL

  • rudyhou

the fact that USA allows and legalizes the ownership of many types of fire arms, yet ban the many kinds of imported cheese... that, i just don't understand.
